1964-1/2 Mustang Coupe / Original engine & newer 302ci included
The story of the 1964-1/2 Mustang is nothing short of amazing. Introduced in April of 1964, the Mustang had the peoples attention from the minute it was introduced at the 1964 New York Worlds Fair. Nearly 680,900 Mustangs were introduced between April 1964 and August 1965. The 64-1/2 was built with Falcon parts, a bullet proof Falcon 170ci 6cylinder engine and an optional 260ci V8 engine. By September 25th of 1964, the 260ci V8 was replaced with the still famous 289 for the ’65 model year. All Mustangs prior to Sept 25th of ’64, were known as “The 1964-1/2”. This very special Mustang is one of them. The data plate shows that this Mustang was built on April 8th,1964 (08D) VIN ending in 8605 making this the 8605th Mustang off the production line and one of the very first Mustangs ever produced.
This a three owner California car. The third and final owner bought the car in 2001 and has had it ever since. Nearly $15000 has been put into the car since 2002 with most repairs and upkeep taking place between 2013-2014. There are two engines with the car. Currently, a replacement 302ci engine is in the car. The original 260ci engine also comes with the car but needs a rebuild. The original transmission and 3.00:1 gears are still in the car. The car starts and runs perfectly. The new dual exhaust system sounds beautiful! Brakes are excellent and tires are fairly new. There is a new aluminum radiator which was recently replaced. It has been used sparingly and was recently driven to NY from Massachusetts without a problem. This Mustang is currently register in NY and has easily passed NYS inspection and can be driven anywhere. Documentation shows that only 4000 miles have been added since July of 2001 thru today. Approximately 89500 miles are recorded on the odometer.
The body is completely rust free. The paint shines nicely but may appear slightly better in the photos than it actually is. We have taken photos with and without a camera flash to try and show the flaws. There are spider cracks to the paint from an older repaint, most notably on the hood and trunk. There is a small dent on the roof as shown in the photos and there are two unprofessional retouches which again, are hard to see in the photos. Overall, the paint is acceptable but the provenance of this car deserves a repaint in its original Rangoon Red. From 10ft away, the flaws are not noticeable. The chrome and trim are in great shape with no pitting, rust or dents. The rear bumper is in excellent condition. The front bumper has some minor scratching but again, no dents, rust or pitting. The car has dual outside painted mirrors.
The interior appears to be all original and in great shape. The drivers seat has some tares (as shown) but the drivers side and rear seats are beautiful. The dash is crack free and all gauges are clear and work as they should. That includes the speedometer, odometer, lights, signals, wipers, radio and heater.
This is a three owner car since new and is well documented including complete maintenance records . The last owner purchased the car is 2001and kept it until just now. This 64-1/2 Mustang is a piece of history a true collectors item worthy of a nice restoration. It can also be driven as is until the time comes for its new lease on life. This historic piece of history is being offered at a very fair price and has a lot to offer.
